Pune: Heavy rainfall in the catchment area of Chas-Kaman Dam over the past two days has led to an increase in the water level, prompting the dam authorities to open all five gates.

Water is currently being released into the Bhima River at a rate of 9,125 cusecs as the dam has reached its full capacity of 8.53 TMC.

The dam's gates, which were previously closed on August 13 due to a lull in rainfall, were reopened at 5 AM on August 24 after the rains resumed. Initially, the outflow was set at 4,600 cusecs, but as the inflow decreased, the release was halted by 7 AM the same day.

By 1:30 PM, the discharge was further reduced to 3,685 cusecs, and the gates were closed at 3 PM due to a decrease in rainfall. However, as the rain intensified again in the evening in the dam's catchment area, all five gates were reopened at 6 PM, releasing water at a rate of 3,685 cusecs. As the inflow remained high, the discharge was increased to 9,125 cusecs at 7:30 PM.

Currently, the dam is at full capacity. Water is being released at a rate of 500 cusecs through the canal and 350 cusecs through the spillway into the river. In total, water is being discharged from the dam at a rate of 9,975 cusecs.

Since the rainfall continues in the catchment area and the dam is at full capacity, the dam administration has issued a warning to the residents along the Bhima River to remain alert.
