India must significantly accelerate investments aligned with sustainability to achieve its climate and development objectives, according to a CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) report. The CII India Sustainability Taskforce 2026 noted that major obstacles are currently hindering the country’s progress on sustainable development.
The report stated that inconsistent definitions of what qualifies as "sustainable" or "transition" activities are causing confusion among investors.
It has been noted that the quality of the reported data requires further improvement, as current disclosures are still evolving and subject to ongoing changes.
The task force has proposed establishing a reliable carbon market and, in cases where the government sets up a specially designated GFI-linked public revenue mechanism, developing a transparent funding route through the Green Finance Institution (GFI) for qualifying climate and transition investments.
It has further advised expanding proportionate, decision-relevant sustainability disclosures and corporate transition strategies, starting with larger, high-emission, trade-exposed organizations and widening the scope as reporting capabilities develop.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), an industry association, has set up a high-level India Sustainability Taskforce to support Indian businesses in advancing their sustainable development efforts.
The taskforce is made up of senior figures from business, government policy, and academia.
