Pune, 22 August 2025: This year, Ganeshotsav has been accorded the status of a State Festival, further elevating its cultural pride and significance. At a review meeting chaired by Maharashtra’s Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, key decisions were announced, including an extension in the time limit for loudspeakers, stronger safety arrangements for immersion processions, and the introduction of state-level awards to recognize notable contributions.

Pune MLA Siddharth Shirole expressed that Ganeshotsav is not just a festival of joy but also one that embodies discipline, harmony, and unity. He appealed to Punekars to celebrate the festival with enthusiasm while honouring its rich cultural tradition and collective responsibility.

While welcoming the government’s intent, some citizens highlighted issues that need attention to make the festival truly memorable. Concerns were raised over Ganesh pandals encroaching on main roads, leading to traffic congestion.

Citizens have also called for strict monitoring of loudspeaker decibel levels to protect both people and animals. There were appeals to ensure that only devotional songs are played, avoiding non-religious or obscene music, laser shows, or DJs during the festivities.

Safety during visarjan processions was another key demand, with reminders of past accidents involving unsecured idols on tractors. Additionally, residents suggested that each pandal should take up social responsibility by arranging at least one meal for the underprivileged, emphasizing that community celebrations should also extend compassion to those in need.

Ganeshotsav, started as a public celebration by freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Pune, continues to carry his legacy of unity. Citizens now urge that its spirit be preserved with dignity, discipline, and devotion.
