Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated precautionary measures in response to suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome reported in villages along Sinhagad Road, including Kirkitwadi, Nandoshi, Barangane Mala, Dhayari, and Khadakwasla.
A municipal water quality report revealed no contaminants in local wells and water sources, but additional measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of residents.
Water Quality Analysis and Findings
PMC officials inspected water supply sources in the affected areas after reports of symptoms associated with Guillain-Barre Syndrome emerged. Samples tested from these areas showed adequate residual chlorine levels and no presence of harmful bacteria like coliform or E. coli, according to chemists from the Parvati Water Center.
However, the report noted that current water treatment measures do not address turbidity and microscopic organisms like zooplankton, necessitating additional interventions.
Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale stated, “Although no contaminants were found in the wells, as a precaution, we have instructed the water supply department to double the chlorine dosage. Residents are advised to boil and cool water before consumption.”
Local residents raised concerns about wastewater accumulation near water pipelines, which could pose potential health risks. In response, PMC has begun removing stagnant water and has issued instructions to lay new wastewater pipelines where necessary. Protective nets will also be installed on wells to prevent debris contamination.
Health and Safety Measures
Immediate Actions: Doubling chlorine dosage in water supplies and disinfecting local wells.
Monitoring: 85 health department teams are conducting surveys in the affected areas.
Protective Infrastructure: Instructions have been issued to install nets on wells and regularly monitor water quality.
Temporary Advisory to Residents
Residents in the affected villages are urged to boil water before consumption as a temporary safety measure. A detailed water quality report is expected soon, and additional measures will be taken based on the findings.
