Pune: The Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak, which has caused concern in Pune, has now spread to Kolhapur and Sangli. While two suspected cases have been reported in Kolhapur, six suspected cases have been identified in Sangli—one in Chintamaninagar and five in rural areas.

With the growing number of cases, local health officials have intensified surveillance efforts. In Sangli, the municipal corporation has surveyed 600 households in the affected areas to track potential cases and implement precautionary measures.

Panic Among Residents Despite Official Assurances

Although officials have reassured residents that GBS is not a contagious disease, there is a growing sense of fear. The patient from Sangli city had recently traveled to Ajmer and Agra, and health officials suspect that the infection may have originated from those locations.

In response to the outbreak, health officials have advised residents to take precautionary measures, such as:

  • Drinking boiled water to prevent infections.

  • Maintaining hygiene to avoid bacterial or viral exposure.

  • Seeking medical attention for symptoms like limb numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or difficulty swallowing.

Rising GBS Cases in Pune; Two Deaths Reported

In Pune, a 54-year-old woman infected with GBS has succumbed to the illness, marking the second suspected GBS-related death. The total GBS cases in Pune have now climbed to 127, with 17 new cases reported on Wednesday, intensifying public concern. Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
