Pune: A rare cesarean section performed on a pet cat in Junnar has become a major topic of discussion in the area. The unusual yet life-saving procedure rescued a pregnant cat along with two of her kittens, highlighting the strong emotional bond between humans and pets.

The incident took place in Bodkenagar, Junnar, where Ganesh and Lata Bele, a local couple, noticed that their pet cat was struggling to give birth. This was her third pregnancy, and despite going into labor the previous evening, she endured severe pain throughout the night without delivering. Realizing the urgency of the situation, the couple sought veterinary assistance the next morning.

A team of four veterinary doctors—Dr. Sagar Pardeshi, Dr. Balkrishna Mukhekar, Dr. Changdev Pathave, and Dr. Sahil Tamahane—was called to examine the cat. Upon assessment, they discovered that one of the kittens had died inside the womb, and a C-section was necessary to save the mother and any surviving kittens. After receiving assurance that the surgery would be successful, the Beles gave their consent for the procedure.

Successful C-Section Saves Lives

The veterinary team administered anesthesia and carried out a C-section on the cat. The procedure successfully saved the mother and two kittens, although two other kittens were found dead inside the womb.

According to the Beles, the mother cat regained consciousness about an hour after the surgery. As soon as the effects of the anesthesia wore off, she began licking and nursing her kittens, displaying maternal affection and warmth.
