Pune: A suspected case of Lumpy Skin Disease has been reported in Karnalwadi, Purandar taluka, causing concern among local farmers. The animal, a two-year-old Khillar breed calf, is in critical condition despite attempts at treatment.

The veterinary department has issued an urgent appeal for farmers to be vigilant and to immediately contact government veterinary officers if they notice any symptoms of the disease in their livestock.

This development comes as a worrying sign, as Lumpy Skin Disease had previously wreaked havoc across the country, leading to significant livestock losses.

After a successful vaccination campaign last year, the disease had been brought under control, but this new case suggests a potential resurgence.

The affected calf belongs to Mahadu Dada Mahanwar of Karnalwadi. The animal has been sick for the past fifteen days, and despite treatment from a private veterinarian, its condition has not improved.

Local authorities were alerted to the situation on Friday by Karnalwadi's police patil, Dinesh Khomne. The veterinary department has since conducted an examination of the animal.

In response to this case, the veterinary department has initiated a vaccination campaign in the surrounding areas, including Karnalwadi, Guluche, Rakh, and Ranwarewadi. Farmers are urged to ensure their livestock is vaccinated and to remain alert for any signs of the disease.

Dr. Asmita Satalkar, Livestock Development Officer, has advised farmers to maintain hygiene in their barns and to seek immediate medical attention if their animals exhibit any symptoms of Lumpy Skin Disease.

"We are taking swift action to address this issue, and there is no need for panic. Farmers should ensure their animals are vaccinated promptly," Dr. Satalkar stated.
