MUMBAI: Hotels and restaurants flouting safety and health rules will not be allowed to become members of AHAR, the apex body of hotel and restaurant owners. Representatives from AHAR, National Restaurant Association of India and Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India held a meeting with civic chief Ajoy Mehta over fire safety in restaurants and hotels. 

In the meeting, Mehta appealed to members of the association to cooperate with BMC while implementing fire safety measures for hotels and restaurants. The civic commissioner further suggested that the association should not give or continue the membership of the hotels not having proper fire safety measures. 

The association members accepted the civic chief’s request and further assured that the association will not allow membership to restaurants or hotels, where the building safety and public health is ignored. 

The members of the association also decided to follow a parallel system to keep a check on hotels and restaurants whether they are following rules regarding fire safety and public health. 

“The association will form a team to check fire safety of hotels. If the team finds that fire safety rules and public health rules are flouted, the membership of the restaurant will be cancelled,” said Adarsh Shetty of the AHAR.
