Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) served a notice to the very famous Leopold Cafe, for erecting a canopy over the eatery without BMC’s formal permission.
On Tuesday, the notice was served to the occupant of the eatery situated at Colaba Causeway.

Leopold Cafe was in the limelight during the 26/11 terror attack. Many foreigners visit the place.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of A-ward Kiran Dighavkar issued the notice to the occupant of the eatery under section 354(A) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, after it was found that the slabs were constructed at the canopy level of the restaurant without BMC’s permission.

The notice says, “If the occupant of the eatery is in the possession of any kind of  permission approved by the competent authority in the favour of the erection of the building or execution of the work, therefore, produce it within 24 hours.”

“If the eatery failed to produce the document of the permission, then the BMC will ask them to demolish it or the BMC will pull down the extra constructed structure,” said a civic official.
According to the sources, the eatery is doing repair work and doesn’t have any permission from the BMC. The work has blocked the footpath causing inconvenience to pedestrians.

However, the cafe denied that illegal construction is being carried out by them. “The BMC itself sent a notice to us to repair the portion of the eatery, that had became dangerous.
“The iron beams on the front facade are so corroded that they pose a real danger. One portion even collapsed after it was propped up. We are getting basic safety measures fixed,” the eatery said.
