UNI

Mumbai: At least four people were killed and 16 injured when a fire broke out in a high-rise posh residential building in Parel area of the city on Wednesday.

The fire erupted on the 12th floor of the 17-storey Crystal Tower building at Hindmata in Parel on Wednesday morning.

The deceased include an elderly woman, Subhadha Shelke (62), and three men.

Sixteen people, including ten men and six women, suffered from suffocation due to smoke. They were rushed to the nearby KEM Hospital, where they are stated to be stable.

Fire-fighters managed to rescue 20 other persons stranded in the residential building, a Mumbai Fire Brigade official said.

The Fire Brigade control room got a call this morning at 0832 hours and immediately ten fire engines and four water tankers along with an ambulance rushed to the spot, he said.

As the smoke from the raging fire spread rapidly, it trapped the residents in the stairs.

About 30 stranded people were rescued with the help of special appliances and staircases built by firemen.

The fire-fighters have managed to bring the blaze under control and cooling operations are now underway.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, official added.
