MUMBAI: The State cabinet has approved the new design of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Indu Mill in Dadar proposed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The height of the statue in the memorial will now be 450 ft.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday said that the cabinet has approved the revised plan of the memorial and the officials have been instructed to give all required permissions in eight days.

As per the earlier plan, the statue’s height was 250 ft and the base height was 100 ft. The revised approved plan has the statue’s height at 350 ft and base height at 100 ft.

MEMORIAL DESIGN
Pawar also said that proper care will be taken of the existing water body and the design will be a replica of ‘Chavdar Tale of Mahad’. More trees will be planted on the site and will be landscaped to withstand marine climate.

The auditorium stage rooftop will have a lawn instead of regular surface. Rainwater will be harvested to fulfil water requirements in the dry season.

There will also be a centre with a seating capacity of 400 where lectures or workshops can be conducted. Also, customised LED lights will be installed.

In a meeting held on Thursday, the entrance plaza building height was suggested to be increased in proportion to the pedestal building to provide a grandiose look to the memorial. Even the door’s height will be increased further to add to the grandeur.

The project will be completed in the next three months and MMRDA will be the nodal agency. According to MMRDA officials, the cost of the project has escalated to Rs 1,080 crore from 763 crore.
