Mumbai: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Subodh Jaiswal, who is on Central deputation, finally took charge as Mumbai’s 41th Police Commissioner with immediate effect on Saturday. While previous police chief of Mumbai Datta Padsalgikar has been elevated as the Maharashtra Director General of Police. Padsalgikar got promoted as the Director General of Police when Satish Mathur retired on Saturday. Now he is the seniormost officer in the DG rank.
Subodh Jaiswal, an IPS officer of the 1985 batch of Maharashtra cadre, was in New Delhi on Central deputation and working with RAW. The State government had written to Jaiswal, asking him whether he is interested to return to Maharashtra and serve here. Earlier, Jaiswal had served as additional commissioner of police, Mumbai.
Jaiswal has worked with the State Reserve Police and actively investigated the Telgi scam. He was the additional commissioner of police when BJP leader Pramod Mahajan was shot dead by his brother Pravin Mahajan.
Jaiswal had also served as a senior official in India’s external spy agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He was also part of the investigating team that probed the 2006 Mumbai serial blasts and has served Mumbai Police as Additional Police Commissioner in the past.
Jaiswal is due to retire in September 2022 while Padsalgikar is going to retire in August 2018. But he may likely get an extension of two years.
Padsalgikar had taken charge as the chief of Mumbai Police in early 2016. He was the 40th police commissioner of the city after taking charge from Javed Ahmed. He had served in the Intelligence Bureau for more than a decade.
Padsalgikar, an IPS officer of 1982 batch, also took charge as new DGP.
He is a recipient of the President’s Police Medal. He has also served as Additional Superintendent of Police in Nagpur, Karad and Nashik, following which he was Superintendent of Police in Osmanabad and Satara. He later was appointed as DCP in various branches of Mumbai Police.
Jaiswal said that it is proud to be a commissioner of police of Mumbai. “Mumbai’s police commissioner’s post has a history and it has its own dignity. My earlier superiors had done a great job being a commissioner of police of Mumbai, I will try to follow in their footsteps and maintain the decorum of the post,” said Jaiswal after taking charge.
