In a step towards reviving the city, Bombay Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) bus services in Mumbai to ply on roads again from Monday. After two months, bus services will resume for regular passengers.

During the lockdown period, services were only open to essential workers like, hospital staff, govt employees and more. Around 70 BEST buses ferried as ambulances for COVID-19 patients.

NMMT administration has allocated 200 out of 450 buses, to begin from Monday, complete resumption will take place gradually.

Bus services in Mumbai are especially resuming for the officegoers, from June 8 onwards 10 per cent of employees from each sector resume their work, which means public transport will be needed to travel across the city.

No bus will work at full capacity, only one passenger is allowed for two seats and up to 5 people can stand on the bus if need be.

“On a pilot basis, on Friday, we allowed a few shopowners and their staffers to travel in our buses. From Monday, we will go full-fledged and allow all office-goers to board after they show us ID cards, " said Victor Nagaonkar, a BEST senior officer. Bus conductors have been advised to allow limited people on the bus, senior citizens above 65, and students are prohibited from taking the bus service.

BEST officials said all containment zones will be avoided at all costs. Although buses will ply across the city, BEST will create routes which will skip containment zones like Dharavi, for the safety of passengers, bus drivers and conductors.
