Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared new advisory to its clean-up marshals and asked them not to impose fine for those travelling without masks inside their private vehicles. The new rule was declared on Sunday by the civic body.

One must note that, if you are travelling via public transport such as autorickshaw, cabs the fine for not wearing a mask will continue to be levied.

The BMC on April 8 directed that wearing face mask is mandatory after cases of the novel coronavirus saw a huge surge in the city. Apart from collecting fines, the administration also began making violators perform public services, including sweeping roads, if they said or refused to pay the fine.

However, the punishment had not discouraged offenders. With the intention to curtail the spread of COVID-19 infection post-Diwali, BMC also had increased alertness in the city and the violation of the mask rule attracted a penalty of Rs 200.

According to reports, the civic body had been penalising 42 people per day and recovering fine around Rs 10,000 per day. Rs 63.39 lakh was collected between April-November last year as fine from Mumbaikars not wearing masks in the K-westward area.
