SIT arrests Shiv Sena activist in connection with Aurangabad riots

Aurangabad, Maharashtra: One more Shiv Sena activist, Laxminarayan Bakhriya alias Lachu Pahalwan, was arrested by the police Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday night for his alleged involvement in riots which had erupted on midnight of May 11 and claimed two lives besides causing loss to public properties worth Rs several crore.

According to police, Bakhriya is father of independent Corporator Yashashree Bakhriya from Rajabazar Ward. She extends support to Shiv Sena in Aurangabad Municipal Corporation.

The SIT has taken action against Bakhriya after police got strong evidence of his active involvement in the riots.
Number of various political parties had criticized police department for not taking action against him for his alleged involvement in the riots. He was accused of leading one of the particular groups in the riot and extorting money from roadside vendors which led to clashes.

Offence have been registered against him in City Chowk Police Station under Sections of 435, 436 of IPC and other relevant sections, police added.

Earlier, two Corporators- one each from Shiv Sena and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) - were arrested in connection with the riots.

The SIT constituted to probe riot related cases by City Police Commissioner Dr Milind Bharambe has started to collect evidences, including CCTV footage and video clips against those culprits those who were involved in the riot from various affected parts.

Meanwhile, situation is normal in trouble-torn areas and people have starts their routine work. However, police department still has deployed security forces in those areas to avert any untoward incidents.
