Pune: The State Animal Husbandry Department has collaborated with city-based NGO, RESQ Charitable Trust to rescue animals in flood-affected areas of Sangli and Kolhapur. The Animal Husbandry Department said that 10,000 vaccines for ‘Haemorrhagic Septicaemia’ have been administered to buffaloes in the flood-affected areas. 

Animal Husbandry Department, Pune, District Deputy Commissioner Sheetal K Mukane said, “Three teams comprising 16 veterinary doctors from Pune district, Para Vet and supervisors along with members and veterinary doctors of RESQ trust have left for the flood-affected areas. Essential minerals and medicines have been sent with the teams.” 

“Haemorrhagic Septicaemia - a bacterial disease in which the immune system is weakened, often attacks buffaloes during this time. Till now, we have administered 10,000 vaccines in flood-affected areas of Kolhapur and Sangli,” added Mukane. 

Mukane said, “The situation in Shirol, Karvir and Hatkanangle Talukas of Kolhapur was worst.”

“A team comprising professors and students of Krantisinh Nana Patil College of Veterinary Science, Satara reached Kolhapur to help.  In Kolhapur, around 400 animals were shifted. However we have still not received exact data because of lack of connectivity,” he added.  

Tina Mohandas of RESQ said, “We started the rescue work and local animal husbandry officers helped us in identifying the areas where animals were caught. We have our own veterinary doctor and there were doctors and personnel from Animal Husbandry Department too.” 

“The condition of animals became bad, as some of them were tied and struggling. There were a few which were infected due to intake of dirty water. We are providing them medicines,” said Mohandas.
