The BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum, which convenes chief justices, presidents of supreme courts, and senior judicial officials from BRICS nations and partner countries, began here on Friday.
Hosted by the Supreme Court until September 6, the forum will feature bilateral meetings led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant with senior judicial leaders from BRICS member states and associated countries.
The forum will serve as a venue for discussion among the participating judiciaries and for sharing perspectives on current matters concerning the delivery of justice, international dispute resolution, technology, and sustainable development, the Supreme Court said in a statement released on Thursday.
As part of the forum’s bilateral engagements, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant will conduct a series of one-on-one meetings with the heads of judicial delegations on the inaugural day, it stated.
In its statement, the Supreme Court announced that the substantive sessions will concentrate on four main themes:
mediation and international commercial disputes,
cross-border enforcement of arbitral awards,
the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and the judiciary,
judicial leadership in the context of sustainable development.
The mediation session would explore it "as a strategic tool for settling international commercial disputes in a globalised economy," it stated.
Similarly, the second session would address the matter of cross-border enforcement of arbitral awards, during which the legal experts would discuss the obstacles to enforcement and the potential for enhanced procedural harmonisation.
The statement noted that the judicial dignitaries set to meet the CJI include
Igor Krasnov, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation;
Zhang Jun, Chief Justice of China and President of the Supreme People’s Court;
Boulos Gahmy Iskander Boulos, Chief Justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court;
Sunarto, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Indonesia.
The other leaders are Mohammed Hamad Al Badi Al Dhaheri, President of the UAE Federal Supreme Court; Andrei Shved, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus; Aslambek Mergaliyev, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan; Mahube Betty Molemela, President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa; Ayatollah Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, Chief Justice of Iran; and Malikakhon Kalandarova, Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan.
On the second day, delegation leaders from BRICS nations and partner countries will speak at the forum, presenting their views on matters of shared concern for judicial institutions.
Judicial leaders from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the UAE are expected to attend, together with delegates from partner nations including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
