Coronavirus India: Antiviral drug 'Remdesivir' gets approval from India for emergency treatment

ST Staff

The government of India, on Tuesday, gave permission to the antiviral drug Remdesivir developed by the Biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences Inc for emergency usage for the treatment of patients affected by the coronavirus.

Ramdesivir has been the most strictly observed drug. It is the first-ever drug to show some signs of betterment in the affected patients during the official clinical trials. The Health regulators have approved the drug in Japan after it was permitted for 'emergency usage' a month back by the U.S Food and Drug Administration.

In a statement made through email, the Drugs Controller General of India said, "(Remdesivir) approved on June 1 under emergency use with the condition for five dose administration."

However, there was no further response to the email which was sent for some more insights on the matter.

According to the data provided by the Ministry of Health https://www.mohfw.gov.in, India has recorded more than 198,706 coronavirus cases which include some fresh cases as well. It has around 5,598 death reports until Tuesday.

On Monday, Gilead Sciences assured that the drug has been fairly effective on patients with COVID-19 showing moderate symptoms on those who were on a course for five days, on the other hand, the ones who were on it for around ten days did not show much progress.

Authorities of South Korea and Europe also showed some curiosity and interest for the antiviral drug. Last Friday, South Korea even asked for the import of Remdesivir. However, Gilead is still working on obtaining approval of regulations in both the markets.
