Coronavirus India: Country partly opens one of the world's biggest hospital to fight COVID-19

Delhi: Considering the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases in the country, India opens one of the largest hospitals in the world to fight the novel coronavirus. 

According to Delhi government, The Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre, made 2,000 of its 10,000 beds operational on Sunday to attend to the growing number of cases. The remaining 8,000 beds are expected to be operational from Wednesday, July 1. 

A one of its kind hospital in the country, the hospital is located at Chattarpur in Delhi. Ahead of its launch on Saturday, Home minister Amit Shah and Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the COVID care centre. 

Describing the facility on Twitter, Kejriwal went live from the COVID care centre and also mentioned it to be "among the largest hospitals in the world."

Home Minister Amit Shah also Tweeted about the visit to the Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre stating, "Visited the 'Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre' in Delhi to review its preparedness. I thank Radha Soami Satsang Beas and all others who helped to create this huge COVID care facility. This 10,000-bed centre would provide huge relief to the people of Delhi."

As confirmed by Shah, the care centre will be managed by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). 

As the country slowly edges towards opening up all economic activities under its Unlock 1, there has been an exponential rise in the number of cases reported on a daily basis. 

According to the data released by the health ministry on Sunday, India reported its largest spike in the new number of COVID-19 cases. 

Currently, the number of active cases in the country stands at 210,120 with 16,475 of total deaths reported. The number of cured patients continues to be higher than that of the active cases at 321,722
