Eight dead, 26 injured as bus falls into gorge in Himachal

SHIMLA: In a major accident, atleast eight people were killed and 26 sustained critical injuries after a state transport bus skidded off and fell into a gorge here at Gajehri near Chhaila on Friday morning.

Shimla SP O P Jamwal told UNI that the ill-fated bus was heading towards Sharontha village from Shimla, when it rolled 250 mts down the road.

Police said that the incident took place at 0845 hrs, at Gajehri near Chhaila, about 45 km from Shimla, killing seven on the spot and another in the hospital.

“Prima facie it appears that the driver had lost control over the wheels that led to the mishap”, police added.

The deceased were identified as driver Rajeev Kumar, Sunil Sharma, Mahinder Chauhan, Rohani, Murtoo Devi, Satya Devi, Dula Ram and Sukhdev, all residents of the capital.

Police is yet to ascertain the cause of the accident. Besides, the District Administration has distributed immediate relief of Rs 15,000 to the kin of the deceased.

The injured are being treated in the hospital and further probe is on.
