The Supreme Court pronounced its verdict Friday on the pleas challenging the judgement of the University Grants Commission (UGC) enquiring universities and colleges to conduct final year exams by September 30 due to the coronavirus outbreak. A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan pronounced the judgement on Friday.

The Supreme Court while hearing clearly stated that that the deadline can be altered but exams will be held. Students will not be promoted. States or UTs cannot pass students without examinations as directed by UGC. The states have given the freedom to approach UGC to seek postponement of exam.

The apex court stated that states, which are not inclined to conduct final year exams by September 30, will have to make representation to the University Grants Commission (UGC).
