Shubham Mishra arrested over rape threats to female comedian Agrima Joshua

The Vadodara police, on Sunday evening, arrested 26-year-old Shubham Mishra for making derogatory comments and threatening Agrima Joshua, a female stand up comedian. The accused had uploaded a video on his social media account, openly threatening to rape Agrima Joshua. Vadodara Police filed an FIR against Shubam Mishra, under IPC and IT Act sections.

The female standup comic had once joked about the statue of Shivaji Maharaj with GPS tracker, solar cells and laser rays in one of her open mic sessions. However, according to media reports, her joke wasn't received well, she got a lot of flak for the same. Pratap Sarnaik, a Shiv Sena leader and MLA personally took offence and called for Agrima's arrest, after her video went viral on all social media platforms. On the other hand, Agrima Joshua, understanding the gravity of the situation, released an apology on her Twitter account and pulled down the video from the internet. 

The tweet read, "I am sorry for having hurt the sentiments of the many followers of the great leader Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. My heartfelt apologies to followers of the great leader, who I sincerely respect. The video has already been taken down. Please amplify."

Similarly, Shubham Mishra didn't receive the joke well, he found it in bad taste. Mishra, known for his abusive and straightforward approach, he uploaded a video on the internet, addressing Agrima Joshua's act and openly threatened to rape her, he used highly abusive language with no filters.

Shubham Mishra is a social media influencer, who calls himself a social worker. He has a YouTube channel with more than 3 lakh subscribers. Mishra has gained popularity with his videos about current affairs in highly abusive language and harsh criticism.

Shivananda Jha, the NCW wrote a letter to Gujarat DGP seeking action against Shubahm Mishra. Apart from threatening Agrima Joshua, Shubham also mentioned other comics including Kunal Kamra.

Several comics, netizens and organisations also shared their views about the same on Twitter.
