Pune: A 64-year-old woman who was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome passed away due to pneumonia, as confirmed by Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital authorities.
The woman was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome on November 17 and admitted to a private hospital for treatment after experiencing breathing difficulties. On November 24, she was transferred to Dr. D.Y. Patil Hospital, where she developed pneumonia.
Following a period of intensive care, the patient was moved to YCM Hospital on December 29 for continued treatment. Despite the medical efforts, the woman passed away on January 21 due to complications arising from pneumonia, said Dr. Rajendra Wable, Dean of YCM Hospital.
GBS Cases in Pimpri-Chinchwad
Pimpri-Chinchwad has reported a total of 13 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Out of these, six patients have recovered and have been discharged, while five others are still receiving treatment in different hospitals. This incident marks the first fatality linked to the illness in the city.
Testing conducted by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) has identified Campylobacter jejuni bacterium and norovirus as the primary causes of this condition.
According to NIV, these pathogens are spreading through contaminated food and water. The infections primarily attack the nervous system, leading to a compromised immune system.
