Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated road construction at Katraj Chowk following the acquisition of a long-disputed private land parcel. The move aims to resolve severe traffic congestion in the area.

The land, registered under Survey No. 1/2, was initially proposed for a 30-meter-wide road under the 1987 Development Plan, requiring the acquisition of 6,200 square meters. However, the acquisition was delayed.

In the 2017 Development Plan, the road width was expanded to 60 meters, prompting PMC to initiate land measurement, valuation, and acquisition. As per the 2013 Land Acquisition Act, a compensation of ₹21.57 crore was granted to the landowner.

With ongoing flyover construction at Katraj Chowk, traffic congestion was expected to ease. However, the immediate clearance of this newly acquired land has accelerated relief efforts. Despite the public holiday, PMC's Road Department started site clearance today, utilizing JCB excavators to remove debris, soil, and waste.

Speaking on the development, PMC Road Department Head Aniruddha Pawaskar stated: "Constructing a road at Katraj Chowk is crucial to addressing traffic congestion. Given the high traffic density and heavy vehicle movement, a strong cement concrete road is essential. Although the project will take time, once completed, it will provide a seamless commute for citizens."
