Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Solid Waste Management Department has identified 288 chronic garbage dumping spots during a recent night survey.

The survey, which spanned over three days, aimed to curb the ongoing issue of garbage being dumped on roads and open spaces during late-night and early morning hours.

The operation, conducted from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. across 15 different ward offices, revealed the extent of the problem. On the first night, 208 dumping spots were identified, followed by 224 on the second night, and 288 on the third.

These areas have now been earmarked for immediate cleanup, with garbage collection scheduled for early morning to ensure the city remains clean during the day.

This initiative comes as part of the administration’s broader efforts to maintain Pune’s five-star ranking in the central government’s Swachh Survekshan cleanliness survey.

However, despite previous campaigns and penalties imposed on violators, the issue of illegal dumping persists, largely due to inadequate waste collection infrastructure, population growth, and public negligence.

Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department, explained the rationale behind the late-night operation: “The problem of open garbage dumping is a serious concern. We have identified 288 spots in the city where this happens regularly.

Our plan is to ensure that garbage from these locations is collected early in the morning, so citizens wake up to a cleaner city. We will also take strict action against offenders to deter further dumping.”
