Pune: The Pune International Centre (PIC), a think tank that aims to enhance the intellectual, cultural, and educational legacy of Pune, will inaugurate its state-of-the-art building on Republic Day (January 26).
This marks the culmination of a long-cherished dream by Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar and Dr. Vijay Kelkar. The Dalai Lama will inaugurate the center remotely due to health concerns, with his message to be read during the event.
From Vision to Reality
The vision of a center akin to the India International Centre (IIC) in Delhi, promoting national and international intellectual discourse and encouraging research in various fields, was conceptualized years ago by Dr. Mashelkar and Dr. Kelkar. The dream started taking shape after Dr. Kelkar retired and settled in Pune, dedicating himself to realizing this vision.
Facilities at the New Campus
Located in the Panchavati area of Pashan, the first phase of PIC’s campus includes a 200-seat amphitheater, administrative and research offices, a library, and offices for the chairman, vice-chairman, and director. Additionally, a 400-seat auditorium and a three-story office building are being developed to provide a steady income stream for the center.
A Center for Intellectual Discourse
Like its Delhi counterpart, PIC is an independent, apolitical think tank that conducts discussions and seminars on pressing issues such as national security, climate change, governance, urbanization, international relations, and more. Annual events like the Asia Economic Dialogue and other research publications have already established PIC as a key player in intellectual and academic discourse.
Membership and Funding
PIC boasts a strong membership base, including 187 founding members, 320 lifetime members, and 14 corporate members. The center’s ₹100-crore project has received funding commitments from major organizations such as Tata Trust, Reliance Industries, Bajaj Foundation, and Wipro Foundation.
Architectural and Cultural Significance
Designed by Christopher Benninger, the campus reflects his philosophy of blending knowledge and nature. The center aims to offer an enriching experience for visitors while preserving India’s intellectual and cultural vibrancy.

With its new campus, PIC is set to become a beacon of knowledge, hosting research, discussions, and cultural exchanges that will enhance Pune’s legacy on both national and international platforms.
