Pune: A 26-year-old IT professional who suffered a severe eye injury after being struck by a stone thrown by a drunken man in the Ramtekdi area has had her vision successfully restored after six months of intensive medical treatment.

The woman had partially lost her vision due to the injury, which caused significant damage near her eye, including a fractured facial bone and damage to the optic nerve.

The incident, which took place six months ago, occurred when the woman was riding as a pillion passenger on a two-wheeler. The stone-throwing incident led to heavy bleeding and significant trauma to her eye and face. The injury directly impacted her optic nerve, resulting in the loss of vision and complicating her recovery.

A team of doctors, led by ENT specialist Dr. Sudhir Halikar and plastic surgeon Dr. Ravi Swaminathan from Noble Hospital, undertook a series of complex surgeries to restore her vision.

The medical team performed an ‘Endoscopic Optic Nerve Decompression’ procedure to relieve the pressure on the optic nerve by removing a portion of the bone from the optic canal. Additionally, a titanium plate was used to support the eye socket after the bone initially supporting the eye was removed.

After six months of ongoing treatment and multiple surgeries, the woman returned for a follow-up in August, where doctors confirmed that her facial injuries had almost fully healed, and her vision had been successfully restored.
