Pune Welcomes Its First Pickleball Team, Backed by Bollywood and Business Icons

Pickleball, known for its inclusivity and ability to bring people together, is poised to make a significant impact on fitness and community-building across India.

Pune: The World Pickleball League (WPBL) proudly announces the addition of Pune United as the city’s official franchise, backed by an impressive team of owners: Bollywood actors Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh, corporate leaders Sudhir and Sunanda Mehta of EKA Mobility and Pinnacle Industries, and educationists Ajeenkya and Pooja Patil of Ajeenkya DY Patil University.

Pune United aims to transform pickleball—a sport rapidly growing in global popularity—into a household name in India, while fostering a culture of health, fitness, and community engagement.

Riteish Deshmukh shared his enthusiasm for the venture, saying, “Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the world, bringing unmatched excitement for players of all ages. Pune United is our chance to champion a team that inspires individuals and communities to embrace this wonderful game, fostering healthier and fitter lives.”

Genelia Deshmukh highlighted the unifying power of pickleball: “Our mission with Pune United is to ignite a love for the game that transcends the court. By promoting camaraderie and wellness, we aim to enrich lives and strengthen community ties through this engaging sport.”

Pune: The Ideal Hub for Pickleball’s Growth

Sudhir Mehta, Founder and Chairman of EKA Mobility and Pinnacle Industries, described Pune as the perfect city for a global sports franchise.

“Pune is youthful, vibrant, and brimming with potential. Pickleball, with its accessibility and appeal, aligns perfectly with today’s fast-paced lifestyle. Pune United will not only nurture talent but also position Pune as a hub for innovation, fitness, and community-building,” he said.

Ajeenkya D Y Patil, Founder-President of Ajeenkya DY Patil University, emphasized the team’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

“Through Pune United, we aim to connect people of all ages, fostering a sense of pride and belonging while showcasing Pune’s rich culture and unparalleled energy,” he noted.

Welcoming Pune United to the league, Gaurav Natekar, Founder & CEO of WPBL, expressed his excitement as a Punekar.

“With its diverse and passionate ownership, Pune United is set to elevate pickleball’s popularity in the city and beyond. Pune’s sporting heritage makes it the perfect breeding ground for this dynamic sport,” he remarked.

Pickleball, known for its inclusivity and ability to bring people together, is poised to make a significant impact on fitness and community-building across India. As part of WPBL, Pune United will take the sport to greater heights when the league officially begins on January 24, 2025.
