Chennai Super Kings supporters went through a mix of emotions at Chepauk on Monday. The five-time champions slipped to a surprising five-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the crowd still witnessed a memorable moment when MS Dhoni appeared on the field. The 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been sidelined for the entire season due to injury, much to the disappointment of CSK fans. Yet, with CSK playing their final home game at Chepauk this season, Dhoni walked out for a team photograph and later took a lap of honour, saluting the steadfast support of the Chennai faithful.
Adding to the nostalgia, Dhoni also crossed paths with his former India and CSK teammate Suresh Raina, who was at the venue in his role as a commentator. Long considered two of the franchise’s key pillars, Dhoni and Raina played crucial roles in guiding CSK to four IPL titles together.
While supporters still cling to the hope of Dhoni appearing in the final match or even in the IPL 2027 season, Raina disclosed details of an unexpected conversation he had with the former captain about a possible return. It is fair to say that Dhoni’s response to Raina left fans heartbroken.
I told him, 'You’ve just given IPL 2026 a missed call; that doesn’t count. You need to return next year.' He replied that his body felt a bit weak, but I insisted, 'We’re not accepting any excuses; you must play next year.' Ultimately, it’s his personal decision, but I believe he’s optimistic, and the team is starting to get well again," Raina said on Star Sports.
Dhoni, who has not played a single match for CSK this season, told Raina that his body is no longer the same as before, making it unlikely that he will be able to turn out for the franchise next year. During the post-match press conference, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming was also questioned about MS Dhoni’s future. Fleming stayed non-committal, stating that it is a decision for the management to make.
It is ultimately a decision for the management. I am aware there has been extensive discussion about it. MS (Dhoni) has been present frequently this year, which is crucial for the team and for maintaining continuity among the younger players, so he has played a significant role. Although he has not taken the field, he has still had a major influence on the team.
We’ve accomplished many positive things. We’ve brought in several new players who, we hope, will become long-term pillars for CSK. However, I understand that we are ultimately evaluated based on results, and that’s fair. So, this is a decision for the management, not for me,
