ST Staff

In yet another tragic news coming in from Italy, a 34-year-old nurse involved in treating the novel coronavirus patients killed herself after testing positive for the disease. Reportedly, she was terrified that she had infected others.

Daniela Trezzi, who was working at the intensive care ward at San Gerardo Hospital in Monza (in the COVID-19 hard-hit Lombardy), was under “heavy stress”.

“Each of us has chosen this profession for good and, unfortunately, also for bad: we are nurses,” the federation’s statement said. “The condition and stress to which our professionals are subjected is under the eyes of all.”

A similar incident of a nurse committing suicide happened a week ago in the city of Venice.

Mario Alparone, the hospital GM, said that Trezzi had been homesick since March 10.

According to the UK-based Daily Mail, around 5,760 healthcare workers in Italy were diagnosed with coronavirus, which accounts for eight per cent of all cases in the country.

The entire world is gripped in the severe coronavirus crisis, and the number of infected people continues to rise rapidly globally, now well over 450,000. On Wednesday, the deputy British ambassador to Hungary died of the disease. Steve Dick, 37, passed away in Budapest.

Italy remains the worst affected nations. As of Wednesday night, the country saw almost 75,000 affected with the death toll crossing 7,500. Starting March 25, even India sees a 21-day complete lockdown.

The healthcare staff across the world need to be lauded and supported at this hour of crisis. Despite the high chances of getting affected, they are working tirelessly in a bid to ensure treatment.
