Shanghai Disneyland reopens after three-month coronavirus closure

ST Staff

Disneyland in Shanghai was reopened on Monday following a more than three-month coronavirus closure as China moves close to daily life and Walt Disney Co takes a step towards reviving global tourism caused by the outbreak.

The theme park in China’s most populous city is the first of the six Disneyland Theme Park around the globe that has reopened since COVID-19 crisis. The novel coronavirus first emerged at China’s Wuhan city in December 2019.

The park opened on Monday welcomed a capped number of guests who had to book tickets in advance, have their temperatures checked at the park gate and show a QR code designed by the government to prove they are not a health risk.

Staff at the park held signs educating ‘please maintain a proper social distance from other guests’ and drew yellow lines and posters placed on grounds showing visitors where to stand when waiting. According to Chinese state media, tickets for the first day were sold out on Friday despite the measures and persistent fear of new infections.

Disney said there would be the improved frequency of sanitisation and fumigation. The park will limit or append shows that frequently include the interaction between visitors and famous characters such as Mickey Mouse.

On the other side, activities including indoor theatre shows and play areas for children shut in account with restrictions imposed by the government. About the rides, they will be limited to one group of visitors per car.

CHINA BACK ON TRACK

In the past few days, China has reduced coronavirus risk levels in all provinces, indicating its containment as a nation and has almost returned to normalcy with industries are resuming their functioning following directives from the government.

Other entertainment centres and gyms are also opening gradually. Meanwhile, China continued to report COVID-19 cases, including asymptomatic ones.
