Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday declared that it will contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections from 92 seats while its alliance partners will bring in their candidates from the remaining seats in the Assembly consisting of 126 members. The party also declared a list of 17 candidates for the third and final phase of the Assam elections.

“In Assam, BJP will contest on 92 seats and on rest of the seats, our partner parties will contest,” BJP National General Secretary, Arun Singh said. The BJP announced 17 candidates for the third phase including Chandra Mohan Patowary from Dharmapur, Suman Haripriya from Hajo, Siddhartha Bhattacharya from Gauhati East and Atul Bora from Dispur.

The polls will be held in three phases starting March 27 and will be held on April 1 and April 6. Results will be announced on May 2.

No party got an absolute majority in the elections that took place in 2016. The BJP had appeared as the single-largest party with 60 MLAs, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) had won 14 and 12 seats respectively. The ruling coalition also had the support of an Independent MLA.

On the other hand, the Congress had managed to win 26 seats, while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won at 13 places.

NADDA IN ASSAM

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), President JP Nadda will be on a one-day visit to poll-bound Assam on Monday where he will address three public rallies.

Nadda will reach Lilabari Airport in Assam on Monday afternoon and address a public rally at MV Field, Dhakuakhana, BJP said in a statement. It further added, “From MV Field, he will reach IB Field, Jamugurihat Sootea to address another rally. In the evening, he will address the third rally at HS Field in Borbhagiya.”
