PUNE: A rape accused committed suicide in the premises of Ghodegaon sub-jail under the jurisdiction of Manchar police station of Pune rural police on Thursday.

The deceased, Suldas alias Kukya Kale (25) of Srigonda in Ahmednagar, was arrested by the police for being involved in a dacoity and raping a woman last year in Landewadi.

The Pune rural police had taken his custody his from Ahmednagar police and had kept him at Ghodegaon sub-jail. 

According to the Pune rural police, on Thursday evening, when a police official was passing from in front of the custody room, he observed that Kale was not there. 

The official saw that the door of the bathroom attached to the custody room was half open. He called out to Kale and after receiving no response, he called another constable and found Kale hanging inside the bathroom.

The police have registered a case of death and have initiated an investigation into the matter.
