3 killed, 7 injured in Expressway accident

Pune: Three persons were killed and seven others sustained severe injuries in an accident near Lonavala on Pune-Mumbai Expressway on Monday.

The victims were going from Thane to their native place in Sangli for voting during gram panchayat elections, which were scheduled on Monday. The bus they were travelling in developed a snag at Boraj near Lonavla.

According to the police, the passengers had got down from the bus and were standing on the roadside. Meanwhile, a truck came from behind and hit the bus, following which these people were injured. The truck driver was also injured.

After getting information, officials from IRB, MSRDC and Pune rural police rushed to spot and shifted the injured persons to Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi.

The deceased persons have been identified as Sahil Shripati Pawar (16), Tanaji Pandurang Naikwade (35) and Umesh Aba Naikwade (22), all residents of Charangaon in Shirala taluka of Sangli district. An FIR has been registered against the truck driver, Arul Babu (35) of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
