Pune: While the city faces a major garbage disposal problem, especially for wet garbage, High Class Residency in Bavdhan Budruk has built its own natural compost plant. 

The society has 130 flats, generating almost 100 kg of garbage a day. This garbage, which used to be taken out by waste collecting vehicles and thrown out in a nearby dumping yard, is being processed by the society itself now. The society built a natural compost plant in 2016 in the form of pits which have a capacity of 100 kg wet garbage composting every day. It cost them around Rs 1.2 lakh. The society collects wet and dry garbage separately and the wet garbage is composted in this plant. Every four months, around 200 kg of a potent organic compost is harvested from this plant. 

The society uses this organic compost for in-house gardens and also sells it to residents at a minimal cost for private gardens. The society claims that it is able to maintain greenery around the premises due to this compost. The plant is operating successfully since the last two years now.

High Class Residency has various other environment friendly initiatives likes rain water harvesting. The society also has a plan to upgrade the sewage water treatment plant, which is available presently to recycle its water for reuse, which can save around 50,000 litres of water every day. The society also runs a free yoga training centre, which is used by many people in the area.
