To become a good lawyer, listen to others: Kapil Sibal

ST CORRESPONDENT

PUNE: Senior lawyer of Supreme Court (SC) and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said that advocacy is a skill, it is like cooking a dish with a perfect mixture.

Sibal was delivering a lecture at Bharti Vidyapeeth (Deemed To Be University) New Law College in Kothrud on Saturday. The university had organised the Dr Patangrao Kadam Lecture series on ‘Advocacy Skills’.

“In life, you should be prepared to learn from others, which is essential in any profession. Advocacy is an art of listening to people/others. Life is not all about law. Law emerges from life and the fundamentals of law are based upon common sense, and so lawyers should also use common sense. The lawyer should expand his knowledge in all other fields like commerce, economics, arts, etc, and for that, he should be able to read and listen,” he said.

“SC stated the Internet is a fundamental right, so what is communication? Is it also fundamental? This needs to be understood. Success in the profession is not only keeping a good relationship with the clients but also keeping good relations with colleagues,” Sibal said.

“In the court of law, nobody is superior, Art. 14 states. Equal opportunity exists in courts to all the lawyers. Lawyers should be masters of the case, as it is not only the law but it is the interpretation of the law that is important. Why the law is made? What is the emotion behind the Law (Art. 370)? Know your Judge (KYJ) has also become an important part of your legal profession as judges are also human beings. They have their own individual ideologies to determine the cases. The lawyer should have the courage to speak, fight for what is right and also argue against a tide. Right and wrong changes with the times. Passion is part of human activity and societal relationship plays an important role in the legal profession. Your mind is like a parachute which should open safely,” he delivered.

Prof Dr Shivajirao Kadam, Chancellor, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed To Be University), Prof Dr Manikrao Salunkhe, Vice-Chancellor, G Jaykumar, Registrar, Dr Bhagyashree Deshpande, college in-charge Principal were also present.
