Civic body resumes drive against spitting, littering

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has resumed the drive to stop spitting and littering at public places. The drive was restarted on Friday after election for Pune Lok Sabha seat got over. Solid Waste and Management Department took action against 863 persons.

Dnyaneshwar Molak, Joint Municipal Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Department, said, “We have collected fines from 863 offenders for littering in public places. After election, we resumed our drive to keep the city clean and it will continue throughout the year.” 

The PMC took action against 747 offenders, who were littering in public places and collected Rs 1.29 lakh in fines. It also imposed fine on societies having non-operating internal garbage processing plants. 53 were found spitting on roads.
 
As per solid waste management rules-2016, fine amount is of Rs 150 for spitting in public places, throwing garbage on roads (Rs 180) defecating in open (Rs 500) and littering (Rs 200). The PMC has published fine amounts in newspaper and instructed public to follow rules. 

During Swachh Survekshan 2018, the civic body had started the drive across the city.
 
Unfortunately, despite several new initiatives launched to execute Swachh Survekshan 2019, Pune  dropped from 10th to 37th rank in the country. Now, the corporation has decided to start preparation to improve its rank in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan.
