Pune: After the accident at Kasarwadi, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MahaMetro) has constituted a technical committee to inquire into the episode that caused no casualty, but created traffic chaos in the area. The MahaMetro officials said that while the contractor responsible for the accident is penalised, the crane operator involved in the accident has been sacked.

As per MahaMetro officials, the accident was due to human error. Following the accident, MahaMetro has revisited the standard operating procedures and have assured to work in a better way to avoid such accidents in future.

The MahaMetro is constructing the 16.5 km Pimpri-Swargate route. Officials said that they will be focusing on quality materials and also pay surprise visits to ensure the safety of workers at work.

“Over 1,000 pilings are been erected in last two years and this was a first such incident. We are using over 131 equipment which are been checked on a timely basis,” said a Metro official.

The incident occurred at 2.30 pm on Saturday when the 30-foot, 200-metre piling rig deployed at Pimpri-Kasarwadi stretch to drill the ground to check underground utility lines crashed at the under-construction metro site.
