PUNE: Three students have been identified by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), who have uploaded wrong information on the website to avail the earn and learn scheme for the second time.

As reported earlier by Sakal Times, the varsity has allegedly favoured some students while bringing them under the earn and learn scheme for the second time, which is not allowed as per the rules. In all, nine students availed the scheme for the second time, while around 13-15 students were not allowed to avail the scheme for the second time.

“We have received nine cases of students, who were brought under the scheme for the second time. Of these, three students had provided wrong information to the university. As we recently went online with the scheme, these students took undue advantage and gave details only about their graduation degree,” said the Director of students welfare, Prabhakar Desai.

The university has set up a committee to examine the matter. It will also revise the earn and learn scheme parameters. As the scheme is availed mostly by underprivileged students on campus, the varsity has decided to go soft on the erring students.

“Except for the three students, the rest have genuine reasons to take it for the second time. Considering their financial condition, we cannot withdraw the facility now. We have decided to extend the facility to the remaining 13-15 students as well. There are around 30 students, including the nine who will get the opportunity for the second time,” said Desai.

“This exception is made only for this year. From next year, we will be able to keep tabs on students enrolled into the scheme as it will be fed online,” added Desai.

Speaking to Sakal Times, SPPU Vice Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar said, “We will consider genuine cases like a student who opts for a higher degree and requires to avail the facility as the student is not repeating the degrees (double masters) but enhancing his qualification. We have set up a committee, which will analyse all the cases and act positively.”
