Extremely heavy rain over Pune region today: IMD

PUNE: Sounding the red alert, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very heavy rains till forenoon of August 9 in Pune district and ghat sections. The IMD continued to place Pune, Raigad, Kolhapur and Satara districts on red alert for August 8 with warnings of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at these places 

“In the view of strong westerly winds blowing from the Arabian Sea, there are chances of very heavy rains in coastal districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka on Thursday. Its effects may be felt in adjoining areas of Madhya Maharashtra,” said IMD Head Weather Anupam Kashyapi. 

On Wednesday, the rainfall intensity reduced substantially. Since Tuesday night, the cumulative rainfall till 5.30 pm on Wednesday was barely 11 mm in the city. 

Heavy rainfall was reported from southern parts of Maharashtra and adjoining north Karnataka regions on Wednesday, with flood-like situation reported from these bordering areas. 

“Heavy rains will continue to lash parts of Konkan, Goa, north Karnataka and isolated places in Madhya Maharashtra till August 9,” said Kashyapi.
