PUNE: The Family Planning Association of India and department of Lifelong Education and Extension of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) had jointly held a session on the occasion of World Population Day on July 11.  

The session was held at two city-based colleges, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College in Aundh and Mamasaheb Mohol College, Paud Road. Marathi actress Gayatri Datar was present as the chief guest.

Statistics presented during the session stated that 30 per cent of pregnancies are unwanted or accidental. The organisers spoke about the need to have planned pregnancy and safe sex practices. It also insisted on male sterilisation over female sterilisation to increase male involvement in family planning and to bring gender equality. 

The session also highlighted that the overpopulation will lead to serious issues like risk of mother and child deaths, depletion of natural resources, degradation of the environment, conflicts and wars, rise in unemployment and high cost of living.
