Pune: Following demands from various farmers and farmers’ organisations on onion subsidy, the State Government, on Thursday declared that the subsidy of Rs 2 per kg on onion sold will be applicable in the case of all onion sold between November 1 and December 31, 2018. 

Earlier the subsidy was applicable for onions sold by farmers in APMC market between November 1 and December 15, 2018. 

The maximum relief will be given on 200 quintals of onion sold by a farmer. 

Maharashtra onion farmers have expresses their dissatisfaction with the amount and have demanded the help of Rs 500 - Rs 800 per quintal. Several reasons have led to the steep fall in the prices of the onion crash and onion are available in the retail market for Rs 10 per kg and farmers are demanding the same price in the wholesale market. 

The relief was declared by the government for the onion farmers as they were bearing the brunt of agrarian distress and have been compelled to sell fresh onion at Re 1/kg in Nashik wholesale market.
