Pune, 13 June 2025: Traffic movement on the lane in front of SNDT College in Kothrud has been severely disrupted for the past fifteen days due to large garbage dumpers parked there daily from morning until afternoon.

A large dumper is stationed every morning in the alley to facilitate waste collection and sorting, remaining there till afternoon hours. Initially, this work was carried out in an internal alley, but due to redevelopment work in that area, the waste sorting has been shifted to the lane in front of SNDT College, leading to congestion and inconvenience for commuters and local residents.

Angered by the daily traffic chaos, the Erandwane Public Ganeshotsav Mandal submitted a representation to the Warje-Karvenagar Regional Office and the Kothrud Transport Department on Thursday (12th June). The Mandal has demanded that the waste sorting and collection be shifted immediately to a more suitable location that does not disrupt traffic or trouble citizens.

Prashant Velankar, chairman of the Mandal, and treasurer Suresh Nimbalkar were present while submitting the demand.

Commenting on the issue, Deepak Raut, Assistant Commissioner of the Warje-Karvenagar Regional Office, said that the search for an alternative site for waste collection and sorting is underway and a solution will be finalised soon.

Root of the Problem: Lack of Waste Segregation
Waste collectors in the area go door to door to collect household waste, but since most citizens fail to segregate waste at the source, the garbage must be sorted manually in public spaces before being transferred to larger vehicles.

Officials pointed out that if residents cooperated by segregating wet and dry waste at home, such inconveniences could be avoided. However, since no localities are willing to allot space for this purpose, finding a new spot remains a challenge for the civic body.
