Pune: Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, recently a 1,000 sq ft area at Jafreen Lane which is under Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) limits, where garbage was being dumped from past several years, has been now cleaned and an open air gymnasium has been made.

Dilip Giramkar, a ward member of PCB, said, “From last 50 years, the open space at Jafreen Lane which is behind MG Road, was being made ugly by dumping of garbage due to which residents were suffering a lot. I have been watching the condition of the street and residents staying near the dumping place from the last several months and I thought of converting it into a library or an open gym,”

“When I took residents’ opinion, they voted for a open gym. Hence, the place was turned into an open gym where seven gym equipment and two benches were installed and saplings have been planted. After the makeover, the place looks better than the earlier one. It was recently inaugurated by DN Yadav, Chief Executive Director of PCB and it will be maintained by us in the future,” Giramkar said.

“Also, we have started distributing two dustbins to each household and commercial places so that the littering will reduce. In this way, the mission will also be successful,” Giramkar added.
