Pune: Amid the surge of COVID-19 cases in Pune, the city may soon see stricter measures in place. The PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) on Monday gave a hint of reintroducing containment zones in the city.

Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said, “The spread of infection is on rise in Pune. Last week's positivity rate of 4.6 per cent has now gone to 12.5 per cent. A review meeting was held today to take the stock of the situation. Officials from the health department along with the PMC Commissioner were present at the meeting.”

“Even though there are no new set of rules in the city, the PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) is planning to take more precautions in the city. Besides, the civic body is also planning to form new containment zones in some four areas of the city,” he added.

The Mayor also stated that 1,063 government provided beds are already reserved while private hospitals have been also instructed to provide additional beds. The action regarding the use of a face mask will be implemented effectively in the city too. Earlier on Tuesday, Pune city reported 309 new COVID-19 cases taking the total cases to 1,95,496. On the positive front, 272 patients were discharged from the city.

The city was declared a ‘no containment zone’ by PMC from January 1, 2021. The municipal commissioner had said that if cases are found in any specific area, housing society, then it would be announced micro containment zones.

Talking about the district, out of total 3,93,869 COVID-19 patients, 3,79,976 have recovered from the infection, however, there are 4,835 active cases in the district. A total of 9,058 patients with coronary heart disease have died. With mortality rate standing at 2.30 per cent, total 9,058 people have lost their lives in the district till date. On the other side, the recovery rate is as high as 96.47 per cent in the district.
