Liver transplant gives new life to 37-yr-old

Sakal Times

Pune: A liver transplant at Sahyadri Specialty Hospital, Deccan, gave a new lease of life to a 37-year-old recently. The recipient was a non- alcoholic suffering from end-stage liver cirrhosis. A green corridor was prepared between Pune airport and Sahyadri Speciality Hospital, Deccan, and the liver was transported for transplant.

The liver was harvested at Government Medical College (GMC) in Nagpur from a 59-year-old male donor, who was declared brain dead following a head injury after a road accident. While the liver was brought to Sahyadri Specialty Hospital, Deccan, the heart of the donor was taken to Chennai and cornea was donated in Nagpur.

Dr Bipin Vibhute, Liver transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgeon, Sahyadri Hospital, said that the patient on whom the liver was transplanted is a non-alcoholic person suffering from end-stage liver cirrhosis.

“He was admitted seven times this year. We received the information about a brain dead person in Nagpur. The patient's relatives, doctors from GMC Nagpur and social workers provided valuable cooperation and support,” said Vibhute.

He added that Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) Pune and traffic police have been instrumental in coordinating the transport of the organ through the green corridor to save lives of patients in need.
