LokSabha 2019: Parties worry as weekend holidays may affect voting

Camil Parkhe

PIMPRI: The longer holidays stretched up to the polling day on Monday, April 29, has caused tension among the main political parties and workers in Maval and Shirur Lok Sabha seats.

It is feared that taking advantage of the three-day consecutive holidays, many people in this industrial town and IT hub may leave the city for picnics and thus skip voting on Monday.

April 27 being the fourth Saturday is a holiday for many people, followed by Sunday and the subsequent holiday declared on Monday, April 29, on account of voting in Maval and Shirur Parliamentary seats.

Most software and other companies in Pimpri Chinchwad and Chakan have declared holiday for their employees on the voting day on Monday.

Many primary and secondary schools have also declared their annual results on Thursday and Friday while a few will declare on Saturday. Hence, many families are likely to move to their native villages for holidays or family engagements. Incidentally, hotels and resorts in Lonavla, Khandala hill stations and other popular picnic spots in nearby areas have already recorded advance bookings for the weekend holidays.

Pune had recorded the lowest voting percentage, less than 50 per cent, although, the polling was conducted on Tuesday, April 23. This precedence has caused anxiety among all major political parties and their candidates in the two constituencies.
