PUNE: Following the incident of piling rig collapse at Kasarwadi on Saturday afternoon, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MahaMetro) officials have assured that they are thriving for safe and quality work.

This is the third incident wherein MahaMetro has got stuck in quality issues. The earlier being one in which honeycombing was observed in the concrete surface after removal of shuttering of one of the piers in Phugewadi in September last year. Another was demolition of an entire pillar due to poor concrete near river bed on Vanaaz-Ramwadi metro corridor in May last year.

On Tuesday, MahaMetro officials said the agency is adopting various testing techniques to avoid such incidents in the future. While the agency has formed a technical committee to find out the reason for the accident, they are also taking help of technical experts to prevent such accidents.

"The metro pillars are tested using core testing methods and rebound hammer testing method, and the quality of material used is tested in labs under different temperatures," said a MahaMetro official.

On Saturday a 30-foot, piling rig deployed at Pimpri-Kasarwadi stretch to drill the ground crashed at the under-construction metro site. While there were no injuries in the mishap, the accident led to traffic chaos.
