PUNE: Maoist ideologue Kobad Gandhy was released from Vishakapatnam Central Jail on Tuesday evening. Gandhy was arrested in Delhi in the year 2009 for his alleged involvement in the activities of the banned organisation, Communist Party of India (Maoist).

Gandhy was reported to be imprisoned in Tihar jail (Delhi) and Cherlapally Central jail (Hyderabad) before getting lodged in Vishakapatnam Central jail.

Sixty-year-old Gandhy has secured bail in multiple cases pending against him. He was formerly relieved of terror charges against him by Patiala court in Delhi. Gandhy received acquittal in UAPA and for the charge of being a member of CPI (Maoist) by Patiala court in June 2016.

Gandhy, who hails from a wealthy Parsi family from Mumbai, has studied in the prestigious Doon school and St Xavier College. He got involved himself into left-wing politics and got shifted to Nagpur along with his wife Anuradha Gandhy, who was also a Maoist ideologue in the year 1982. 

Gandhy was allegedly heading the South Western Regional Bureau and was looking after the Naxal activities in the states of Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
