Mayor distributes equipment to traffic cops

PUNE: Ahead of the New Year, Pune Mayor Mukta Tilak on Wednesday gave 100 breathalyzers to the Pune traffic police. Along with the breathalyzers, 1,000 barricades, 200 plastic indicator cones, 200 plastic dividers, 1,000 batons, 1,500 fluorescent jackets were handed over to the traffic division for better functioning of the traffic police. Deputy Commissioner Police (Traffic) Tejaswi Satpute thanked the mayor for handing over the necessary equipment ahead of the New Year.

Mayor Mukta Tilak said that the budget of Rs 3.25 crore has been approved for the traffic department. "The demand for these equipment were pending and so we thought of assisting the traffic department. The equipment will help the department in implementing the traffic rules in the city," added Tilak.

Speaking about the drink and drive on the New Year, DCP Satpute said that traffic department takes action against people involved in drink and drive. "Like every year, this year too we will be on our toes to nab such people," added Satpute.

Officials of the traffic department said that on every New Year eve, nearly 200 to 300 people are caught in drink and drive cases.

Mayor Tilak has handed over the breathalyzers to various other departments after alcohol bottles were found in many government offices.
